House to Home: Brand New Bathroom!

Another in the House to Home Series as we make the new house our home. Our bathroom had a leak so drastic action was needed as was a brand new bathroom!

Welcome back to Mummy Fox and another in the House to Home series. This House to Home post features our brand new bathroom!

When we first bought our house we said that the bathroom would be the last room we’d do in the house. We then found a leak at the back of the toilet. It had been there since before we moved in. Unfortunately we found out it’d most likely been like that for over a year. Therefore leading to the leak affecting the floorboards and them rotting.

We had to make the decision of whether we were going to rip up the floor and replace the floorboards or if we were going to do the whole bathroom. My head said just do the floor but my heart said a new bathroom.

After some consideration we came to the conclusion that it was sensible to do the whole bathroom! Otherwise we’d have a nice new floor and the rest would be, well… You can see what it looked like in the picture below!

What it looked like before

It was orange, everywhere! There aren’t really any other before photos as it isn’t the kind of bathroom you want to photograph.

We got a few quotes, dealt with the insurers about what they’d cover and then the chaos began. We knew that it would be difficult without a proper toilet or bath/shower. But I didn’t expect it to take so long. We were without a shower for two and a half weeks and we had to go to family and friends house to have one. It wasn’t ideal.

You have to keep reminding yourself that it’ll be worth it once you have a new bathroom.

Picking a brand new bathroom

I’m writing this and wishing we’d had more say in what our bathroom would be like. I’m hopeful that if you are reading this and having your bathroom done, your builder will listen to you.

We had no say in the toilet, sink or bath, he didn’t even replace things like for like. Originally we had a unit that was part of our sink. We’d have liked to have picked one similar so we had some cupboard space underneath like it was before. I would recommend going through everything you want/need with your builder and agreeing to check before they are started!

Things to look at when picking your brand new bathroom:

  • Floor Tiles
  • Wall Tiles
  • Toilet
  • Sink
  • Bath
  • Accessories
  • Colour of the walls (if not tiled)

I had an idea in my head that I wanted big, dark grey tiles. But could I find any I liked anywhere? No! They were either too light or too dark or you couldn’t tell properly online. I went to see some at Wickes and I actually really liked them. They were wall and floor tiles so we’d be able to do it all the same. I did have to nosy at Pinterest to see whether I thought this would work or if it would be too much. I’ll let you decide for yourselves when you see the finished product…

Work in Progress…

Floorboards were ripped up and new been put down. All of the tools and equipment were over the bath and it was so dusty! We had to be careful whilst in the bathroom. There were pipes exposed therefore posing a bit of a danger with a toddler around. It was amazing what a difference no floor made.

As you can see even once the tiling had begun it was chaos. The old tiles did not want to come off the wall without pulling half of the wall off with them. The builder told us he’d be tiling on top of them and we panicked. Luckily Google quickly told us that was okay provided they were solid and a few other things. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

It was quite nice seeing the contents of our old bathroom ripped up and out of the house. Albeit it was very messy!

We were really able to see a difference once some of the tiles were on the wall. They were dirty, not grouted and not secure, but they were instantly better. Anything is better than that orange though right?

It was really hard to tell how it would look with just a few tiles on the wall. On more than one occasion I did worry that I’d made the wrong decision. Dan didn’t have a massive opinion either way with decorating and he was happy to go with my decision. It was a lot of pressure…

We asked for a shower head to be added onto the bath taps. Every girl needs to be able to wash their hair over the bath if they want too! But we also have an electric shower already in place. I think we are just being a bit greedy!

Our Brand New Bathroom!

We were unable to walk on the floor for the last day of work whilst it set, it was worth it because this is what we came home to…

We have our little extras and accessories to add, but I’m not willing to drill into the brand new tiles, so I’m asking my dad to come over and help us out. But I can’t believe what a big difference it has made. We absolutely love it and we are so glad the orange is gone!

I do feel like it needs a bit of colour splashed in there somewhere though. What colour would you go with? Is there a must have we should go with for storage? Let me know your ideas!

P.s. Always go with your heart…

It’s so chic — I love the grey tiles! I think I’d add some little succulents in glass containers on the window sill, and maybe add a blind but apart from that…. wow!!! Love it! 🙂 Cx #HomeEtc
